Bessie Byrd awards Frances Morant with The Geraldyne Zimmerman Trailblazer Award

Geraldyne Zimmerman Scholarship Gala Committee Chair, Frances Morant was surprised with the presentation of the Geraldyne Zimmerman Trailblazer Award at the 4th annual Gala, Friday, September 20th, 2019. Mrs. Morant has been committee chair since the idea was first mentioned more than 5 years ago.

Geraldyne Zimmerman was a true pioneer and trailblazer: A woman ahead of her time. She was an African American female mathematician. She began her career in higher education in the 1940's. She taught at both Claflin University and SC State University. She was energetic, dedicated, and passionate about giving back to her community. She was inspired and inspiring. She believed and lived the example of a "rising tide lifts all boats." Her life's work was to improve the lives of those around her. She stressed the importance of community service, hard work, and education.

The Geraldyne Zimmerman Trailblazer Award is given in recognition of women who embody Miss Z.'s pioneer spirit with continuing community impact through youth development.

Congratulations, Mrs. Morant. Miss Z. would be proud.
