DILLON GIRL SCOUTS BRING CHEER TO LOCAL PATIENTS

TROOP LEADER: OUR COOKIES ARE JUST FINE
FEBRUARY 20 2008
From the Island Packet:
Girl Scout cookies in the Lowcountry aren't stale and weren't damaged by storage problems, according to local Girl Scout leaders. In fact, the cookies supplied here are from a different baker than those used in the Raleigh area where some cookie abnormalities were reported, according to Girl Scout officials. "Our cookies are fabulous," said Susan Brooks, co-leader of senior Girl Scout Troop 369, which has members on Hilton Head Island and the mainland. "We have gotten so many compliments on our cookies."
The problems that may be plaguing the cookies one state to the north haven't hit the coastal area of South Carolina because the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina use Louisville, Ky.-based Little Brownie Bakers, said Victoria Marshall, director of development and marketing for the regional Scout group. It was the other approved Girl Scout cookie baker, ABC Bakers, headquartered in Richmond, Va., and a bakery in South Dakota, that supplied the cookies to Girl Scouts in the Raleigh area.
Little Brownie Bakers said its cookies were not the ones damaged by flooding in a storage facility in the Winston-Salem, N.C., area. "You can be assured that we would never do anything to compromise the trust you have placed in us to provide high-quality, safe food," the bakery said in a statement.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT COOKIES NOT AFFECTED BY RALEIGH, NC INCIDENT
FEBRUARY 20 2008
An article that appeared in the Island Packet recently about Girl Scout cookies does not affect the local Girl Scout troops and Girl Council, Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, Inc. (GSESC). "While this is an unfortunate incident in North Carolina, we do not want our local Girl Scouts to be affected by what has happened in another area that uses an entirely different cookie baker. Our cookies are different, our recipes are different and our baker is different,” said Victoria Marshall, Director of Development and Marketing. “It is important for our local community to be aware that our baker of choice is Little Brownie Baker and their products have not been compromised. One of our primary concerns is for the satisfaction of the consumer and a key learning component for girls through this activity is customer satisfaction.”
Through the Girl Scout Program, girls develop business and money management skills through activities such as the Girl Scout Cookie sale, the leading business and economic literacy program for girls. The Girl Scout Cookie Sale Activity gives girls the opportunity to earn money for community service projects, council-sponsored girl activities and events, summer camp and/or international travel experiences.
GSESC would like to thank the individuals and corporations who help to support thousands of local Girl Scouts learn valuable life skills by purchasing Girl Scout cookies. You can still support your local Girl Scouts by purchasing packages of cookies at booth sales that will be held through March 11th.

GIRL SHARES HER HAIR
FEBRUARY 6 2008
From the Post and Courier:
Third-grader Cami Emory [a member of Girl Scout Troop 009] could not even imagine letting someone cut her long and beautiful hair, not without a really good reason, anyway. She found that reason a few weeks ago — and donated lengthy locks of her hair to children who have lost theirs while undergoing chemotherapy. The Windsor Hill Elementary School had been reluctant to get even a trim, but decided to share spare hair with children at St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

new insignia reflects the modern girl scout
january 29 2008
From the Island Packet:
More than 90 years ago, being a model Girl Scout meant knowing how to price three cuts of meat, properly store your fur and flannels and operate a vacuum. But to remain relevant in the 21st century, the national girl power organization knew it had to do a little housekeeping of its own. While the scouts of several cookie boxes past endeavored to earn badges like Matron Housekeeper, Child Nurse and Dairy Maid, today's leading ladies are going for insignia like CyberGirl Scout, Couch Potato, B Xtreme! and the Ms. President patch. Since 2000, the organization has been working to revamp its image to keep girls interested by adopting a new mission statement and introducing a more contemporary line of awards and badges.
