Girl Scout Silver Award
Taylor P. of Pawleys Island and Victoria S. of Murrells Inlet proudly announce the completion of their silver award. The silver award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. The girls decided many months ago that they wanted to help Birthright of Georgetown. Birthright is a fully independent organization, not affiliated with any church or public agency. Birthright is credited with assisting more than 1,600 pregnant teens and women in the past ten years. They currently serve about 240 women a year.
Taylor and Victoria are members of Girl Scout Troop 49, part of Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, and the South Strand Service Unit. The South Strand Service Unit held its annual Twilight Camp at St. Michaels Catholic church in Garden City this July. Each night the girls brought in items to donate to Birthright to help Taylor and Victoria with their Silver Award project. The 85 girls that attended Twilight Camp donated over 1,100 baby items in 4 days!! These items included diapers, wipes, clothing, baby toys, bottles and many more items all babies need.
The girls met several times with co-director Mary Lou England to assess the needs for Birthright. Taylor and Victoria spring cleaned the entire Birthright office, organizing and cleaning the items on shelving as well as steam cleaning all the carpets and chairs. They painted and added stencils of flowers and butterflies for the enjoyment of the clients. They also made a homemade bench for the entryway to allow for additional seating.
Taylor and Victoria also learned how to knit and sew, so that they could make homemade blankets for the babies they were helping. Each girl made 3 homemade blankets to go in the newborn baskets they give out to clients upon the birth of their baby. Each girl also made 5 of the newborn baskets which included over 30 items in each basket like: clothing, diapers, wipes, baby lotion, baby wash, baby blankets, baby towels, etc.
The 10 baskets the girls made along with the items donated by our fellow South Strand Girls Scouts means that Taylor and Victoria donated over 1,500 items to Birthright for their Silver Award. The girls completed over 60 hours of service work each, for a grand total of 123 hours of community service! The girls are very proud of their accomplishments and thrilled to have earned their Silver Award. They are already planning for their Gold Award.
